Simple Banana & Blueberry Smoothie
This smoothie is just the easiest thing in the world to make and it tastes just so darn good! This past week my household (i.e. the hubby and I!) have really tried to amp up our intake of plant foods and colourful fruits and vegetables. We have packed as many greens, vegetables and fruits into our meals and snacks as possible. This smoothie was one that we both loved and have made it again and again. I have made it with a frozen banana that was sliced into rounds before freez

Maple Toasted Salted Walnuts
As I was cooking my porridge yesterday I got to thinking about nuts and what would be my ultimate nut. Using the analogy – “If I had to choose one nut to eat for the rest of my life, what would it be?” To my surprise, it didn’t take me long. It has to be walnuts! Apart from being one of the most delicious morsels on the planet, they can be added to just about anything. Baked goodies, salads, vegetables, nutritious truffles or simply eaten as they are - beautiful and natural s

Banana & Dark Chocolate Muffins
One lonely egg and three mushy bananas are all you need to make these delicious little muffins. Banana and dark chocolate are a great combination and you can whip these morsels up in no time. They are an easy treat, snack or lunchbox addition and you can make mini muffins, which would be perfect for children. Be frugal, don't waste any brown bananas! If you don't have time to make muffins, simply peel them and pop them in a snap lock bag to save for a later date, Moist Bana

Tahini Seed Balls
A wee while back, I visited a pre-school to teach parents about healthy lunchbox foods and the importance of nutritious foods for children. Given that this particular pre-school has a nut-free policy, I developed this nut-free tahini seed ball recipe for the parents and their children. It went down a treat! These make a great wee snack in a lunchbox or as an after-school snack when the children get home. They are also perfect for adults as a snack or after exercise to break t

Blueberry Pecan Bread
The inspiration for this Blueberry Pecan Bread is from the lovingly delicious Petite Kitchen Blog. The recipe I used is essentially the same except for the use of organic coconut sugar in place of regular sugar and the addition of some roughly chopped pecans. Just because I love nuts! They also provide great texture and are well worth the addition. I chose to use Brown Rice Flour for its added nutrient content - it contains more fibre for healthy digestion and more B-vitamins

Spinach, Banana & Date smoothie
As promised, here is my favourite green smoothie recipe of the moment. This is a lusciously thick and creamy smoothie. So thick in fact, I like to eat it with a spoon! Of course, you can always add more liquid if you prefer a straw-worthy smoothie. This little gem is packed with so many nutrient-dense foods it's hard to know where to start! Spinach is loaded with nutrients and amongst other things is a great source of B-carotene and magnesium. B-carotene is an anti-oxidant th

Feijoa & Avocado Green Smoothie
Green smoothies seem to be all the rage at the moment, however there is good reason for it! Green smoothies are green because of the addition of nutritious leafy greens such as spinach or kale or other leafy greens. Adding a few big handfuls of greens to a morning smoothie means you already have a few nutritional 'runs' on the board early in the day! It's also an easy way to help children (& adults) eat a few more vegetables. I promise, you can't even tell they are there beca

Hazelnut Power Balls
There are so many combinations of nuts, seeds and butters you can use to create the most nutritious little snack balls. These Hazelnut Power Balls are the result of an experiment that turned out deliciously well! I like to make a batch of snack 'balls' and then store them in the fridge and freezer for the fortnight ahead. If you have more people in your house, they may only last a week! I simply grab one to take with me for morning or afternoon tea for when I feel hungry and

Blueberry, Banana & Coconut Smoothie
Oh for the love of blueberries! These are such a great freezer stash to have on hand. Blueberries make great smoothies, not only for their delicious, nutrient-packed goodness but also for their gorgeous vibrant colour. This smoothie is made with a classic combination of blueberry and banana but boy is it a winner. As they say...an oldie but a goodie! It makes a perfect breakfast or post-training snack and is a wonderful source of calcium, potassium and anthocyanins. Anthocyan

Creamy Avocado, Spinach & Kiwifruit Smoothie
This morning an avocado was giving me a dreamy stare that just beckoned for me to use it. What better way than in a thick and creamy breakfast smoothie? Add to that a good handful or two of spinach, a chunk of frozen banana, a kiwifruit, some chia seeds and almonds and you have yourself a delectable green smoothie. The avocado adds a creamy touch while it's nutritious fats will make sure the smoothie fills you up and keeps you going. Not to mention being great for your heart
