Chocolaty Avocado Mousse Two Ways

I absolutely love chocolaty-like avocado mousse. I tried this nutritious substitute for regular chocolate mousse for the first time last year and I’m now totally addicted! Love at first bite as they say…I make a batch most weeks and then freeze my little cups for when I feel like a sweet treat after dinner. It most definitely hits the spot whilst providing beneficial nutrients at the same time.

I have popped two slightly different recipes below. They both work a treat and I just use either recipe depending upon what I have at hand. I did make the second recipe yesterday and boy it was delicious. Potentially the best batch I have made. Even the hubby devoured a cup for dessert (and yes he did know it was made from avocado and not chocolate!).

Given that beautiful New Zealand avocados are now in season, it’s the perfect time of year to stock up and share the goodness of avocado in as many recipes as you can throughout the week. Avocados are packed with monounsaturated fatty acids which are beneficial for your heart, skin and feelings of satiety. That that means it helps you to stay feeling satisfied for longer which reduces your chances of reaching for something less nutritious!

I always pop in a few chia seeds but if you like a smoother mousse, feel free to leave them out. Don’t be too precious with quantities and have fun trying different flavour combinations too!

Version 1: Honey Sweetened Chocolate & Avocado Mousse

  • 1 1/2 Avocado

  • 3 Tbspn cacao powder or good quality cocoa powder

  • 1 Tbspn chia seeds (optional)

  • 1 Tbspn honey

  • ½ cup thickened coconut cream (I like to leave it in the fridge for at least 2 hours)

  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted

  • 1 Tsp cinnamon

  • ¼ tsp of vanilla powder or 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  1. Process all of the ingredients in a Nutribullet or food processor until thick and creamy. Pour into your serving cups and chill until thick.

  2. Taste and add extra honey or dates if you want it slightly sweeter. You can top each cup with a few cacao nibs if you have them

  3. Serves 2-3 depending on the size of your serving cups.

Version 2: Orange Spiked Chocolate Avocado Mousse – recipe adapted from Petite Kitchen

  • 1 Avocado

  • ¼ can thick coconut cream that has been in the fridge for at least 2 hours

  • 4 medjool dates, pitted

  • 4 Tbspns cacao powder or good quality cocoa powder

  • 1 Tbspn chai seeds (optional)

  • Juice of one small orange

  • ¼ teaspoon of vanilla powder of 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

  1. Process all of the ingredients in a Nutribullet or food processor until thick and creamy. Pour into your serving cups and chill until thick.

  2. Top with toasted coconut or orange zest if you like.

  3. Serves 2-3 depending on the size of your serving cups.

Enjoy!
